The Lore of the Land

In this series, leading folklore expert and medieval literature scholar Dr Carolyne Larrington draws upon her original research, exploring the distinctive figures of the British supernatural landscape, framed by new theories of emotion and cognition. Dr Larrington suggests ways in which the imaginary creatures of folklore still serve to mediate ideas, emotions and ways of being in the psyche of those who live in Britain today.

Carolyne travels to Shropshire to examine the folkloric creatures that are said to have shaped our hills, mountains and rocks.

Episode 2 – Rivers, Lakes and Ponds – 8th Sept 2015 – 13.45

Carolyne visits Marden church in Herefordshire to explore freshwater mermaids and other folkloric creatures that are said to live in our rivers and ponds.

Episode 3 – Forest and Woodlands – 9th Sept 2015 – 13.45

Carolyne creeps through an ancient forest in Windsor Great Park in search of the folkloric creatures that are said to lurk in our woodlands and forests.

Episode 4 – Sea and Shore – 10th Sept 2015 – 13.45

Carolyne travels to Orkney to explore the folkloric creatures that are said to dwell in the sea and on the shore.

Episode 5 – The Farm – 11th Sept 2015 – 13.45

Carolyne travels to Hart Hall in North Yorkshire to seek out the folkloric creatures that are said to reside on our farms.
